Characteristics
- Size: These beetles are between one-sixteenth of an inch to over 1 inch in length.
- Color: Most species of ground beetles are black in color.
- Behavior: There are more than 2,600 species of ground beetles belonging to the family Carabidae. Most species are slightly flat with a small head, large thorax and long antennae. Some beetles prey on harmful insects and are considered beneficial.
Habitats
Outside, ground beetles are commonly found under wood, rocks or objects left on the ground. They are attracted to light and will occasionally congregate near outside walls in the summertime. Some species are occasional invaders and will travel inside, but this is not common. For this reason, most ground beetles are not considered household pests.
Tips for Control
To reduce the number of beetles in or around your home, you should:- Remove outside harborage. Clear out natural debris and other litter that may be used by beetles to breed or hide.
- Eliminate entry points by caulking any gaps or cracks on the outside of your home.
- Keep exterior lights off when not in use. If beetles become an issue, purchase yellow “bug light” bulbs that are designed not to attract insects.
- Install proper ventilation in areas that are prone to becoming moist or damp.
- Remove pet food and water bowls after feeding.
